At an early age, Daniel became interested in the oil fields, a rapidly growing industry in WV at the time. He served in the Civil War, enlisting in the WV Cavalry, serving until the close of the war.

1. Mary L. Farnsworth, b. 29 Sep 1867; m. David Derr of Eaton Springs, WV.
2. Martha J. Farnsworth, b. 30 Aug 1868; m. Mark Collins at Claysville, WV.
3. Edward C. Farnsworth, b. 25 Mar 1871 prob. d. young.
4. Alfred Alonzo Farnsworth, b. 13 Mar 1872; lived in Clarksburg, WV.
5. Prudence Emma Farnsworth, b. 7 Feb 1874; m. Moody Parish, lived in Buckhannon, WV.
6. John Monroe Farnsworth, b. 4 Jan 1876 at Walker, WV; m. 1898 at Hammondsburg, OH Elma Jimison, dau. Joshua and Nora (Beaty) Jimison of North Baltimore, OH. At the age of 19, John went to Wood Co., OH to work in the oil fields and in 1902 moved to KS where he became a major driller and producer in the Cherryvale and Humboldt oil fields.
